Successful Midlantic Fall Yearlings First Session Highlights All Kinds

The 2019 Midlantic Fall Yearlings sale kicked off on a high note Monday afternoon, with a diverse quintet of six-figure horses leading to session improvements in gross and average.

Hip 122, a daughter of Tapizar, proved most popular during Monday's session. Robert White-Skeedattle Assoc. purchased the dark bay or brown filly by the sire of reigning Eclipse Champion 3YO Filly Monomoy Girl from the consignment of Dark Hollow Farm, agent. This is the second foal out of the Not For Love mare Flit, a half-sister to course record setting multiple stakes winner O Dionysus and multiple stakes winner Joy – both graduates of the Midlantic Fall Yearlings sale. The session-topper was bred in Maryland by the consignor.

The session's top colt ended the day on a high note. Hip 150, a son of the late Jump Start, sold for $130,000 as the last horse through the ring on Monday. The dark bay or brown colt was purchased by Cary Frommer, agent from the consignment of Marshal W. Silverman, agent. Out of the winning War Pass mare Gritty Gal, Hip 150 is a half-brother to two to race, including Irish Paulina, a five-time winner at 2 and 3, and Irish Paul, twice placed already this year at 2. The top-priced colt was bred in Pennsylvania.

Five horses sold for six figures during Monday's session, including yearlings by emerging young sires Tapizar (Hip 122) and Dialed In (Hip 8 - $110,000); a colt from the last full crop of five-time leading Maryland sire Jump Start (Hip 150); a colt from the first crop of speedy Speightster (Hip 48 - $125,000); and a full sibling to multiple Maryland Million stakes series winner Crabcakes, by established sire Great Notion (Hip 21 - $120,000).

During the first session, 102 yearlings sold for $2,680,000, a 12.4% increase over 2018's first session, when 103 yearlings sold for $2,384,700. The session average rose 13.5% to $26,275 from $23,152, while the median held steady at $15,000. Fifteen yearlings sold for $50,000 or more, up from 12 sold at or above that marker in the first session last year.
