$2.6 Million Nyquist Colt Tops 2021 Revival of The Gulfstream Sale
Fasig-Tipton's Gulfstream Sale of selected two-year-olds in training returned to Gulfstream Park this week featuring a trio of seven-figure colts by top two-year-olds sires Nyquist and Uncle Mo.
Hip 28, a colt by Eclipse Champion 2YO Nyquist, topped the sale when sold for $2,600,000 to Jamie McCalmont, agent for M.V. Magnier from the consignment of Wavertree Stables, agent (video). The bay colt worked a furlong in 9.4 during the under tack show (video), matching a record set in 2019 by subsequent graded stakes winner/multiple Grade 1 placed Donna Veloce and multiple Grade 1 placed Wrecking Crew. The sale topper is the first foal out of the winning Smart Strike mare Spinning Wheel, a granddaughter of Grade 1 winner Victory Ride. Hip 28 was purchased at the Selected Yearlings Showcase last September for $160,000 by Redwings from the consignment of Lane's End, agent.
Three other colts realized $900,000 or more on Wednesday, including:
- Hip 181, a colt from the first crop of Horse of the Year Gun Runner, sold for $1,700,000 to Gary C. Young, agent from the consignment of Hartley/de Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent (video). The chestnut colt worked a furlong in 10.1 during the under tack show (video). Hip 181 is the second foal out of nine-time stakes winner Needmore Flattery (Flatter). He was a $140,000 Kentucky October Yearlings purchase by Hartley/de Renzo Thoroughbreds from the consignment of Buckland Sales, agent.
- Hip 67, a colt by Champion Sire Uncle Mo, sold for $1,300,000 to West Bloodstock/Jamie McCalmont, agent for M.V. Magnier from the consignment of Wavertree Stables, agent (video). The dark bay or brown colt worked a furlong in 10 flat during the under tack show (video). Hip 67 is a full brother to 2017 Gulfstream Sale grad and juvenile G1W Dream Tree.
- Hip 29, a colt by Nyquist, sold for $900,000 to Spendthrift Farm and West Point Thoroughbreds from the consignment of Eddie Woods, agent for the Complete Dispersal of the Estate of Paul Pompa, Jr. The dark bay or brown colt worked a furlong in 10.2 during the under tack show. Hip 29 is the second foal out a Malibu Moon half-sister to graded stakes winner Javerre.
The sale's top filly came in the form of Hip 169, a daughter of Uncle Mo, sold for $825,000 to West Bloodstock, agent for Robert and Lawana Low from the consignment of Sequel Bloodstock, agent. The bay filly worked a furlong in 10 flat during the under tack show (video). Hip 169 is a half-sister to stakes winner Pico d'Oro out of a Bernardini daughter of multiple G1 winner Champagne d'Oro. The filly was a $380,000 Selected Yearlings Showcase purchase by Autry Bloodstock from the consignment of Bluewater Sales, agent.
Overall, 67 juveniles changed hands for $25,360,000, good for an average of $378,507, the fifth highest average in sale history. The median was $300,000, tied for second highest in sale history.
